I am going to preface this post with this: I understand I will most likely piss off, upset, and trigger some people. I understand I may get some hate for this post. I am also very aware that I may lose friends, followers, and likes not only to my personal social media, but also to my fitness and health page.
And that is ok. Because I am here to promote legitimate, evidence based, science. I will speak out against products and information based on pseudoscience, anecdotal evidence, and confirmation bias. Today, I am going to discuss one of the worst and unhealthy MLM companies that exist. Herbalife. For those of you who are unaware of what Herbalife is, they are one of the largest “health” MLM companies in existence that prey on insecurities and use pseudoscience, anecdotal evidence, and confirmation bias to dupe people into buying and using their products. You may have even seen a Herbalife Shop/Club in your town. They often have a store front that have some vague name like “XYZ Nutrition” or “ABC Nutrition.” When you walk in, they have flashy menus with catchy names of their shakes and teas that most often don’t show their prices, don’t show ingredients, and don’t show they use Herbalife products. This secrecy is partly due to the strict regulations that Herbalife requires their Club/Shop distributers to follow and if they are found to be breaking those rules, they can lose their Shop/Club. These Herbalife Shops/Clubs have gained traction during COVID for various reasons ranging from promises of being “your own boss,” “running your own business,” and “promoting healthy shakes, teas, energy, and meal replacements.” The reality of this, is ABSOLUTELY NONE OF IT IS TRUE. Herbalife is an MLM and not one of those people who runs a Herbalife Shop/Club is the CEO of Herbalife, and in fact, they are just distributers that are part of an upline and downline. (This is part of their predatory practices). So, running one of these Herbalife Shops/Clubs doesn’t make you a # bossbabe, it makes you part of a cog in the ginormous MLM machine. Not only is Herbalife a horrible MLM because of its predatory business practices, their products are ABSOUTLEY NOT HEALTHY and are potentially TOXIC. (See links below) As a legitimate, certified health and fitness provider/professional, THERE IS NO WAY IN FUCKING HELL THAT I WOULD EVER RECOMMEND HERBALIFE TO ANYONE! Herbalife products are only researched and quality tested BY HERBALIFE. They are not put through testing by a reliable, third-party quality control company. This means the consumer has no fucking idea how much or how little of certain ingredient(s) are in the Herbalife product. The majority of Herbalife distributers that run these Shops/Clubs (they are not small business owners as Herbalife is an MLM), have NO LEGITIMATE background or education in health, fitness, and/or nutrition. Their expertise in health, fitness, and/or nutrition is based loosely on a 48-hour weekend seminar which covers more on how to sell the brand Herbalife and how to create a downline. With all this being said, it is 100% YOUR CHOICE how you want to spend your money and what you want to put into your body. I believe that everyone should have as much legitimate, proven fact, science based, information about what products they may put into their body. If you do choose to purchase Herbalife products from a Herbalife Shop/Club, you are NOT helping a friend or a “small business,” you are helping the overall MLM, and you are running the risk of putting harmful products into your body. The choice is yours.
